Botox Pregnancy Risk

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it will be performing additional safety reviews of Botox, Botox Cosmetic and Myobloc. The FDA announcement follows reports linking birth defects to Botox injections in pregnant women. In addition to the United States’ safety reviews, the Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australasia has issued a warning to cosmetic surgeons about administering Botox injections to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The FDA safety review follows a case linking Dysport anti-aging injections administered during pregnancy to a child being born deaf and blind. Although Dysport is not available in the U.S., the drug uses the same active ingredient found in Botox and Botox Cosmetic.
More than 46 cases of adverse reactions to botulinum type A toxin, the active ingredient in Botox, have been reported to Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration. In addition to possible birth defects, Botox has been linked to a variety of other adverse side effects, including reactions resembling botulism.

Botox anti-aging treatments are also discouraged for people with glaucoma or neuromuscular diseases.
