Zinc-Containing Denture Cream Poligrip Side Effects – Poligrip Neurological Damage
GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Poligrip denture cream has announced it will stop making formulas containing zinc amid lawsuits claiming years of excessive use leads to neurological damage and blood problems. Based in London, Glaxo has decided to cease making and marketing Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care products, with plans to reformulate the creams in the near future.
Glaxo’s voluntary action comes as hundreds of lawsuits are poised to go to trial, alleging devastating personal injuries (including paralysis) caused as a result of excess levels of zinc in Poligrip.
Poligrip Side Effects – Neurological Damage, Blood Problems and Paralysis
Poligrip denture adhesive cream contains 38 milligrams of zinc per ounce. Considering that federal health experts recommend eight milligrams of zinc per day for women and 11 for men, the Poligrip levels appear excessive. According to a recent study at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, the right amount of zinc promotes cell growth; however, excess zinc may purge the body of copper, a chemical needed for normal brain and nervous system function.
Plaintiffs say Glaxo failed to warn consumers about potential risks, which has lead to a number of devastating neurological injuries, including:
- Loss of balance
- Loss of sensation in the hands and feet
Glaxo is now facing hundreds of class action lawsuits filed on behalf of consumers who suffered traumatic personal injuries after using Poligrip for several years. Class action lawsuit attorneys say Glaxo failed to inform the users of Poligrip of the potential safety risks associated with its products under liability laws.
Glaxo says the product is safe when used as recommended. One tube of Poligrip is meant to last anywhere from eight to 10 weeks, but according to reports released by Glaxo, some consumers were using a whole tube within a week, digesting 45 times the recommended dose of zinc.
