ObTape Sling Lawsuits

The California-based Mentor Corporation has come under fire because of defects associated with their ObTape vaginal sling. The controversial medical device was removed from the market in 2003 after being introduced the same year.

The ObTape sling was designed to serve as a solution to incontinence. The mesh hammock sling is surgically attached to the pelvis so that it may cradle the bladder and help control incontinence. Lawsuits filed against Mentor Corp. claim that the mesh material used in the sling can potentially disintegrated, injuring the vaginal wall and nearby tissue. This fragmented material could potentially migrate throughout the body, causing a slew of secondary health problems.

ObTape Sling Injuries

The ObTape vaginal sling was pulled from the market after widespread complaints surfaced regarding defects. Some of the injuries associated with the defective ObTape vaginal sling include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Infection
  • Abscess (Localized pus)
  • Cellulitis (bacterial infection affecting the skin)
  • Bloody discharges

A number of lawsuits have been filed on behalf of women whose injuries led to a great deal of confusion, multiple doctor visits and numerous surgeries. Although the sling is no longer distributed, Mentor remains culpable for injuries caused as a result of the device.
