On Nov. 15, 2011, CooperVision announced that it was expanding its contact lenses recall to include certain lots of Avaira Sphere contact lenses. The initial recall, issued in August 2011, involved the Avaira brand product line of contact lenses.
According to the announcement, CooperVision expanded the recall to include certain lots of Avaira Sphere contact lenses, because a residue on the lenses was causing some patients discomfort, pain and haziness. Some patients experienced eye injuries that required medical treatment, according to the announcement.
CooperVision notified patients and healthcare providers about the recall and recommends that anyone who experiences problems with their Avaira Sphere contact lenses contact his or her eye care practitioner and stop wearing their contact lenses immediately.
CooperVision said in the recall that it is focusing its efforts on notifying its customers and is asking them to notify their patients of the recall.
The initial recall was issued in August 2011. With the expansion, the contact lenses recall now affects approximately 6.6 million contact lenses. Of those, 4.9 million were shipped to customers globally.
