Several brands of lobster meat have been recalled from the market because recent tests showed that the manufacturer may have allowed dangerous bacterial listeria contamination into the products.
The lobster meat brand names are: Portland Shellfish Company, Inc., Claw Island, Craig’s All Natural, and Inland Ocean. The products were sold in cooked, fresh or frozen packages and were shipped between May 12 and June 8, 2010. The manufacturer is Portland Shellfish Company
The products may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled lobster was sold nationwide in wholesale and retail locations.

LOBSTER KNUCKLE MEAT, CS 6 x 2 LB, packed under the Inland Ocean brand, production lot numbers 13210, shipped on 05/13/2010.
LOBSTER CLAW & KNUCKLE MEAT, CS 18 x 15 oz, packed under the Claw Island brand, production lot numbers 13210 and 13410, shipped between 05/25/2010 and 06/08/2010.
