Malt-O-Meal Cereal Recall

Cereal manufacturer Malt-O-Meal has issued a voluntary recall of two of its ready-to-eat products as a result of salmonella contamination. The recalled cereals, of the unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat variety, have “best if used by” dates ranging between April 8, 2008 and March 18, 2009.

The Malt-O-Meal Company was founded in 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One of the largest cereal manufacturers in the United States, Malt-O-Meal produces more than 30 varieties of cereal at five facilities located throughout the country. In addition to the Malt-O-Meal brand, the company’s products are also marketed under various other private brands, including: Acme, America’s Choice, Food Club, Hannaford, Giant, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw’s, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality.

Voluntary Recall

Malt-O-Meal issued a voluntary recall after discovering salmonella bacteria in a number of its products manufactured on March 24, 2008. No injuries had been reported at the time of the voluntary recall; however, as of April 11th, 2008, a number of cases were being investigated by public health officials.

After issuing the voluntary recall, Malt-O-Meal has been working closely with various departments (notably the Food and Drug Administration and the Minnesota Department of Health) to identify the extent of product contamination and notify consumers. Consumers who have purchased one of the at-risk Malt-O-Meal cereal products are advised to return the cereal to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those who have consumed the at-risk cereal products should consult their doctor immediately to test for salmonella. Symptoms can include fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
