Wire Grill Brush Recall Lawsuit

Hidden Metal Bristles May Cause Serious Internal Injuries

Increased Risk of Injury After Using Wire Grill Brushes

A growing number of lawsuits are being filed against manufacturers of wire-bristle grill brushes, alleging that these products are dangerously defective. The metal bristles can break off during normal use, stick to grill grates, and be accidentally swallowed with food—leading to severe internal injuries, emergency surgery, and long-term health complications.

What Is a Wire Grill Brush?

A wire grill brush is a common cleaning tool used to remove debris and residue from barbecue grates. It typically features a handle with a head containing dozens of small, stiff metal bristles. While intended to make grilling safer and easier, these brushes pose a hidden danger: the bristles can detach without warning, become embedded in food, and cause serious harm when ingested.

What Injuries Can a Loose Wire Bristle Cause?

When a metal bristle is swallowed, it can lodge anywhere along the digestive tract, leading to:

  • Severe throat pain or sensation of something stuck in the throat
  • Punctures of the esophagus, stomach, or intestines
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever
  • Internal bleeding or infection
  • Emergency surgery to remove the bristle

In some cases, injuries have led to life-threatening complications, including perforated organs and sepsis.

Recent Major Recalls

In early 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced two massive recalls of wire grill brushes due to ingestion hazards:

Weber Recall (February 2026): Weber recalled over 3.2 million metal wire bristle grill brushes. The company was aware of at least 38 reports of bristles detaching, including four cases where consumers swallowed bristles and required medical treatment. CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman stated that the recall addressed a “serious ingestion hazard caused by a dangerous design flaw that allows small wire bristles to detach from the brush and be swallowed without detection”.

Nexgrill Recall (March 2026): Approximately 10.2 million Nexgrill metal wire bristle grill brushes sold at Home Depot between 2015 and 2026 were recalled. The CPSC noted that Nexgrill received at least 68 reports of bristles detaching, including five cases where consumers swallowed metal bristles and sought medical treatment to remove them from their digestive tract or throat.

Alarming Injury Statistics

The scope of this problem is larger than many realize. According to an emergency physician cited in the New York Times, a recent study found that cases of accidental ingestion of loose bristles increased by more than 200% between 2015 and 2023, with roughly 3,739 injuries reported in that period in the United States alone. A separate study published in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology found that the incidence of bristle brush injuries increased 229% from 2015 to 2023.

Between 2002 and 2014, an estimated 1,698 emergency department visits were prompted by wire bristle ingestion injuries. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has identified ingestion of bristles from grill-cleaning brushes as a “preventable threat to public safety”.
