Jennifer Byrd

Partner

Jennifer Byrd leads AWKO’s VA Disability practice, dedicating her career to fighting for the benefits America’s veterans have earned through their service to our country. With expertise in veterans’ benefits law and a commitment to serving those who served, Jennifer advocates for veterans navigating the complex disability claims process.

Jennifer earned her B.A. from the University of Mobile in 2001 and her Juris Doctorate from Faulkner University’s Thomas G. Jones School of Law in 2006. She began her legal career as a solo practitioner in Mobile, Alabama, where she spent a decade representing clients in criminal, juvenile, domestic relations, and probate matters. During this time, she served as a Guardian ad Litem, advocating for children and incapacitated adults who needed a voice in the legal system. She also became a certified mediator, helping parties find resolution in difficult circumstances.

Jennifer is accredited by the Board of Veterans’ Appeals and the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and is a proud member of the National Organization of Veterans Advocates. She handles the full spectrum of veterans’ disability claims at every level, from initial VA claims through appeals to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals and litigation before the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Her practice includes service connection, rating increases, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) claims, and Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU). Her approach is personal, as she is the mother of a U.S. Navy Veteran and sister of a U.S. Army Veteran, and understands that behind every claim is a veteran who sacrificed for this nation. She brings both legal skill and genuine care to the fight for their benefits.

Beyond her legal work, Jennifer has demonstrated her commitment to her community through leadership roles with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of South Alabama, serving as Chair from 2020 to 2021 and Co-Chair from 2019 to 2020. She is also a member of the National Organization of Veterans Advocates Congressional Testimony Committee and has spent time lobbying on Capitol Hill for Veterans rights. She is a member of the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Commission, where she serves as the Vice President of Sponsorship and was a 2025 Captain Hal Pierce Award recipient. She is a member of the South Alabama Veterans Council and the P.L. Wilson Marine Corps League, where she serves as paymaster.
