We tend to think of <\/span>Johnson & Johnson\u2019s Baby Powder<\/i><\/b> and <\/span>Shower to Shower<\/i><\/b> products as common and safe household items to be used to prevent dryness and rashes in a variety of applications. However, these common household products contain a dangerous substance known as \u201cTalc\u201d or \u201cTalcum Powder\u201d which have been shown to be associated with the development of ovarian cancer when used regularly near a woman\u2019s pelvic region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n After analyzing a number of studies, including some which reported as high as a 30% increase in the risk of developing ovarian cancer for women exposed to talcum powder on a regular basis, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified the perineal (genital) use of talcum-based body powders as \u201cpossibly carcinogenic to humans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Studies have concluded women using talcum powder in their genital region on a regular basis have as much as a 30% increase in the risk of developing ovarian cancer.<\/i><\/b> \u2013 International Agency for Research on Cancer<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”gcid-240a9ec6-8ca4-46e7-b795-ccc98c8b36c4″ background_enable_color=”on” global_colors_info=”{%22gcid-b3bc4740-83c0-49fc-94f2-b1bc7d48ace9%22:%91%22header_2_text_color%22%93,%22gcid-240a9ec6-8ca4-46e7-b795-ccc98c8b36c4%22:%91%22background_color%22%93}”]<\/p>\n Johnson & Johnson has been hit with several verdicts in favor of women alleging that J&J Baby Powder caused them to develop ovarian cancer.\u00a0 In one of the largest verdicts in U.S. history, a jury in St. Louis awarded twenty-two women over two billion dollars in compensatory and punitive damages.\u00a0 Following a more recent trial, Johnson & Johnson was recently ordered to pay $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson\u2019s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products.\u00a0 During the trial, the jury was shown internal company documents which demonstrated that Johnson & Johnson knew about the risk of ovarian cancer since the 1980s but hid this important information from the public and regulatory agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n After hearing this evidence, the jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $10 million in compensatory damages to the family but, because of the egregious nature of Johnson & Johnson\u2019s conduct, the jury also awarded $62 million in punitive damages to punish Johnson & Johnson and deter it from similar conduct in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text ul_type=”square” _builder_version=”4.17.6″ _module_preset=”default” link_text_color=”#606060″ ul_font_size=”16px” global_colors_info=”{%22gcid-b3bc4740-83c0-49fc-94f2-b1bc7d48ace9%22:%91%22header_2_text_color%22,%22header_2_text_color%22,%22header_2_text_color%22%93,%22gcid-546ba48d-cfd8-4b8f-9a94-622a690b5247%22:%91%22link_text_color__hover%22%93}” link_text_color__hover_enabled=”on|hover” link_text_color__hover=”#ffaf02″]<\/p>\n\n
