On April 24, 2019, the Baltimore Archdiocese publicly named Bishop Carl Fisher, who was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1987, as being accused of multiple incidents of abuse that occurred in the 1970s. He passed away in 1993.
Bishop Carl Fisher was included in the Maryland Attorney General’s report released on April 5, 2023, which revealed reports of abuse of both boys and girls. The youngest victim was a 7-year-old boy, and the oldest was a 16-year-old girl. The abuse involved rape and, in some cases, payment to the children.
The Baltimore Archdiocese was aware of Fisher’s sexual involvement with young men as early as 1990. In 2003, Cardinal Keeler informed Cardinal Mahony that Fisher had been accused of sexually abusing a minor around 1995. Two of the victims received settlements.
