Ozempic and Wegovy Injuries

Ozempic and Wegovy – Weight Loss and Diabetes Medications Linked to Gastrointestinal Injuries

What are Ozempic and Wegovy?

Ozempic and Wegovy, both manufactured by Novo Nordisk, are injectable forms of the medication semaglutide. This medication mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which can decrease appetite as it slows the passage of food through the stomach.

Ozempic is a weekly injectable drug that was approved for the treatment of diabetes in 2016. Ozempic has been used off-label as a weight loss drug.

Wegovy is also a weekly injectable drug that was approved in 2022 for weight loss treatment for individuals ages 12 and up.

What is the risk of using Ozempic or Wegovy?

Individuals who have taken Ozempic or Wegovy have reported severe stomach issues, including gastroparesis, ileus, stomach paralysis, and other injuries and disorders. As the popularity and sales of these drugs skyrocketed, more and more cases have been reported of individuals developing severe stomach issues while taking these drugs or within six months of stopping.

What is gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis, also called gastric stasis, occurs when gastric emptying is delayed. Delayed gastric emptying means the stomach takes too long to empty its contents. Sometimes, when the food doesn’t empty properly, it forms a solid mass called a bezoar. Bezoars can block the stomach and lead to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and even stomach obstruction, which in turn may prevent food from passing into the small intestine.

Gastroparesis symptoms may include:

  • An early feeling of fullness
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Anorexia
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss

What is ileus?

Ileus is the intolerance of oral intake due to inhibition of the gastrointestinal propulsion without signs of mechanical obstruction. Ileus may present like an obstruction but has a different underlying pathology.

Ileus symptoms may include:

  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Lack of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Watery stools
