WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouch Recalls

WanaBana Fruit Puree Pouches Recalled Due To Elevated Levels of Lead Found

WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches have been voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer in conjunction with the FDA after an investigation concluded the presence of lead in the product. The FDA expanded its investigation and has included Schnucks Apple Sauce with cinnamon and Weis Cinnamon Apple Sauce in the recall.

Why has a recall of the WanaBana Fruit Puree Pouches been issued?

On October 29, 2023, WanaBana USA voluntarily recalled its Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches in response to concerns raised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the pouches contained elevated lead levels. The FDA was alerted by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) after the agencies received reports of four children exhibiting signs of acute lead toxicity.

The NCDHHS, in collaboration with the NCDA&CS, initiated an investigation to determine the source of this lead toxicity in the affected children. After extensive examination, the agencies pinpointed the WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree pouches as the likely culprit responsible for the elevated lead levels in these cases. During the investigation, NCDHHS extensively tested various WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree batches. These tests consistently revealed notably high concentrations of lead in the product.

Since the recall of WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches, the FDA has expanded its investigation, and two additional brands, Schnucks and Weis, have also announced recalls of their cinnamon applesauce products.
The recall includes all batches of WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches, Schnucks Apple Sauce 90g pouches with cinnamon, and Weis Cinnamon Apple Sauce 90g pouches.
