High Rates Of Failure Cause Manufacturers To Recall Defective Hip Implants

In recent years, multiple manufacturers of hip implant devices and hip replacement systems have had to issue recalls of their products due to high rates of failure. In some instances, the defective implants were prone to breakage and failure, while other hip systems were found to cause a dangerous condition known as metallosis. Metallosis occurs when the “ball and socket” portion of the implants are comprised of metal and abrade against each other, allowing chromium and/or cobalt to enter the bloodstream. These defective hip implants are known as metal-on-metal (MOM) devices.

What is a Metal-On-Metal (MOM) Device?

In MoM hip implants, the metal ball and the metal cup slide against each other during walking or running which can cause the release of metal particles. Metal can also be released from other parts of the implant where two implant components connect. The sliding metal surfaces will cause some tiny metal particles to wear off of the device into the space around the implant. Wear and corrosion at the connection between the metal ball and taper of the stem may also occur. Some of the metal ions (e.g. cobalt and chromium) from the metal implant or from the metal particles will enter the bloodstream.

Defective Hip Implant Possible Injuries & Side Effects

Local symptoms of metallosis include:

  • Hip or groin pain
  • Numbness
  • Swelling
  • Weakness
  • Change in ability to walk
