In 2002, a lawsuit was filed against Father Charles Coyle, accusing him of sexually abusing a boy during the 1970s while he worked as a guidance counselor at Newton South High School in Boston. Additionally, another boy who was living with Father Charles Coyle reportedly died by suicide. Coyle was working in New Orleans in 2002 when the allegation was made public and was placed on leave.

A second lawsuit was filed in 2003, alleging that Coyle had abused two brothers while he was a seminarian in Baltimore during the 1960s. The older brother was abused in 1965, when he was sent to Coyle for counseling at the age of 16. The younger brother was abused between the ages of 11 and 13. Coyle passed away on July 1, 2015.

Father Charles Coyle was included on several lists, including the New Orleans archdiocese’s list on November 2, 2018, where he taught at Jesuit High from 1958 to 1961 as a scholastic. He was also listed on the Maryland Province’s list on December 7, 2018, the Baltimore archdiocese’s list in 2018, and the Atlanta archdiocese’s list, where he was assigned to Ignatius House from 1992 to 1995.

Furthermore, the Maryland Attorney General’s Report, released on April 5, 2023, included Coyle’s name.
