In 1993, Father Jerome Toohey was accused of sexually abusing a male high school student who had sought counseling. A suit was filed in 1994 but dropped in 1996 after a ruling in another case by the Maryland Court of Appeals on recovered memories. Toohey was placed on leave without faculties from 1993. In 2005, he was convicted of abusing another male minor in the late 1980s and was sentenced to five years in prison, with 18 months in jail and the balance suspended. In May 2008, his laicization was announced. He is currently on the sex offender registry.
