Father John Justice, a Deacon in 1989, was accused of and confessed to sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in 1985 at St. Louis Church. On December 21, 1989, Archbishop Keeler informed Father John Justice that his deacon faculties were being immediately revoked. In a 1995 letter requesting reinstatement of his faculties, Justice admitted to touching the young girl and sought forgiveness. According to notes from December 1989, a detective stated that the family did not want to pursue criminal charges or civil action and wanted “no contact from the Archdiocese,” believing that the situation was blown out of proportion. The case was “exceptionally cleared,” meaning it was closed with the understanding that the abuse had occurred. Justice made multiple attempts to be reinstated but was denied by the Archdiocese.
