In 1997, Father Raymond Melville left the active priesthood. A man accused him of abuse in a 1990 letter, alleging that the abuse occurred while he was in seminary in Baltimore. The diocese was already aware of his behavior prior to the letter. In 2000, another man sued Melville, claiming he was abused for seven years, starting at age 13 in 1985. The suit was settled.
There were also other complaints in various locations. In 2007, a second suit was filed alleging abuse when the victim was 12 years old in the late 1980s. In 2008, the court awarded this man $4 million. The diocese was dismissed from the suit and the dismissal was upheld by the ME Supreme Court in 2013. In 2007, a third suit was filed. In 2007, Melville was reportedly living in OK, and by 2013 he may have been living in NC.
