In March of 2007, Monsignor Father Richard Smith was taken out of active ministry following accusations by two women that he had sexually assaulted them during their teenage years in 1966-1967 at the former Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Woodlawn.
Father Richard Smith admitted to some of the allegations, and the claims were reported to the State Attorney’s office. In May of 2006, earlier allegations of youth abuse between 1979-1983 were made, but were not made public. Father Richard Smith passed away on October 25th, 2008, and was included in the archdiocese’s list on July 23rd, 2019.
