In 1979, a man reported to the Baltimore Archdiocese that Father Ronald Michaud had abused him as a minor in the mid-1970s. Father Ronald Michaud worked in Maryland from 1973-1978 before transferring to the Diocese of Portland, Maine. He was placed on leave in 1989, and his name was released by the Portland bishop in January 2007. The bishop recommended laicization, but the matter was still pending with the Vatican.
In September 2007, a man filed a lawsuit alleging abuse as a boy in the early 1980s, and in July 2009, a judge awarded the plaintiff a $4.4 million judgment against Michaud (who had no assets). The plaintiff had previously settled with the diocese. Another lawsuit was filed against Michaud in June 2022.
